Windows Live Messenger (also called Messenger 8.0) has been out for a while now and I have invites for the beta... Its really not that great.. hardly any improvements over MSN Messenger 7.5.. and of course its more resource intensive.. But if u still want to try it.. post a comment with ur email id.. will send u a beta invite.
